2348) The Pale Blue Dot

———————————–

     Carl Sagan said:

Look again at that dot.  That’s here.  That’s home.  That’s us.  On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.  The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there–on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena.  Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.  Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

     Profound words.

     But then Sagan went on to say that it is a “…. delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.”

     But according to John 3:16, “God so loved the cosmos that He gave His only Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

     That is far more than a hint that help DOES come from somewhere else to save us from ourselves.

Genesis 1:1 — In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Psalm 33:6…9 — By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth… For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.

Isaiah 40:28 — Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

Hebrews 11:3 — By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

Romans 1:20 — For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

John 3:16-17  — For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge. (Psalm 19:1-2)

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!  You have set your glory in the heavens. (Psalm 8:1)
